September 26, 2015 Museum Day - American Beach Panel
American Beach from Franklintown to Stewartville, Dr. Eugene Emory
Dr. Emory will briefly address the legacy of Franklin Town and Stewartville as precursors of American Beach.: Descendent of Franklin Town, Stewartville and Spanish Florida.
Dr. Emory's address will highlight early visits and social relations of blacks to Fernandina and Franklin Town prior to the formation of American Beach. Franklin Town exist today in the memory of its living descendants, the Franklin Town Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Drummond, Green, Hopkins and Stewart clans who were former slaves of the Harrison Plantation where the Omni Amelia Island Resort currently operates. These links provide a backdrop for a much richer and deeper history of the south end of Amelia Island than is typically portrayed.
